Architectural jewel of the XIX century, the construction was completed in 1817 on the project of the architect Giuseppe Locatelli.
In 1910, the painter Sigismondo Nardi frescoed the theatre vault with a great allegory of the arts and human destiny.
In 1950 the theatre became state-owned, changing its name from Vittorio Emanuele to Teatro Comunale. On the facade there is a sheet of travertine with the inscription Castigat Ridendo Mores “laughing, you punish costumes”, bordered by two masks which represent tragedy and comedy.
